Die-Hard Daihatsu Fan Buys Entire Line-Up in Less Than 3 Years

Quite possibly one of the biggest fans of the Japanese carmaker, John MacKay from Axminster in the UK has managed to buy all four models of Daihatsu’s current line-up in two and-a-half years. It all started when MacKay and his wife came to pick up their new Copen Vivid roadster from a Daihatsu dealer – the couple not only left with the Copen but they also placed an order for the Sirion.

One and half years later, the Daihatsu loving duo replaced their Copen with a new Terios while in April 2007, they brought yet another Sirion – no word what happened to the other one. Finally, in March 2008, following his retirement from the army, MacKay purchased his latest model, the Scion-esque Materia. What a party animal….

2010 Daihatsu Copen Roadster Renderings

Available in Europe and Japan, the Daihatsu Copen is a FWD 2door roadster with an aluminum folding top that looks a bit like an Audi TT Roadster that fell into the hands of Professor Wayne Szalinski (Honey I shrunk the kids). The miniature roadster (133 in. length) has been in the market since 2001 so it’s logical that the Japanese car mags are attempting to predict the appearance of the next generation model that’s expected to be introduced by 2010. –More pics after the jump

Daihatsu Dealer Dresses Euro Scion With “Wow Dude, It’s a Materia” Livery

Who’d ever believe that the Euro version of the Scion xB could bring on such passion! Well, apparently no one except for the Daihatsu Lynx dealer of Yeovil Somerset in the UK. “We all sat down and brainstormed how to promote this quirky car and I came up with the idea of a psychedelic theme,” said Aftersales Manager, Nick Morgan.

He added: “The inspiration was a pop video on YouTube called ‘Groove Is In The Heart’ by Deee-Lite and I briefed the graphics company, Motor Mode UK of Kent to come up with something similar. The result is really head-turning but it was a nightmare to apply all the stickers and it took our workshop two days. It was only after we completed the work that we decided to restrict it to one demonstrator.” And thank God for that… –One more pic after the jump

EuroNcap: 5-Stars For Mazda2, 4-Stars For Honda Civic & Daihatsu Materia

Today, EuroNCAP published the test results for the new Daihatsu Materia, the Honda Civic 5d and the Mazda 2. Starting with Mazda’s new supermini, which was granted a re-test due to a problem with the deployment of the front airbag, the “2” scored a maximum five stars for adult protection, fours stars for child protection and a mediocre two stars for pedestrian protection. -Continued

As with the Civic Hybrid Sedan, the 5door Civic didn’t manage to achieve a maximum five stars rating for adult protection, managing a satisfactory 4-star rating. According to EuroNCAP, in the frontal test, the driver's airbag was not sufficiently well inflated to prevent the driver's head from contacting the steering wheel while structures in the dashboard presented a potential hazard to the driver's femurs. The Civic 5d was awarded four stars for child protection and just two stars for pedestrian protection.

Finally, the new Daihatsu Materia scored an adequate four star rating for adult protection, three star rating for child occupant safety and a mere two stars for pedestrian safety

MAZDA2

Front impact
In the first frontal test, a small disturbance shortly before impact resulted in late firing of the airbags and protection of the driver and passenger was compromised. Mazda investigated the problem and upgraded the airbag control software to handle such situations more effectively, as disturbances such as these can happen in real accidents. Production cars now have the new software and all cars manufactured before the change will be upgraded. In the re-test, the airbags fired as intended. The passenger compartment remained stable and the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger dummies were well protected. Mazda were able to demonstrate that the knees and femurs of occupants of different sizes and those sat in different seating positions would be similarly well protected.

Side impact
The rear door on the struck side opened during the test and the car was penalised one point.

Child-protection
The Mazda 2 scored maximum points for its protection of the three year old, based on the dummy reponses in the frontal and side impact tests. Mazda dealers can disable the passenger airbag, allowing a reaward facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. Without this modification, a rearward facing childseat should not be used in that seat as the airbag cannot be manually disabled. The label warning of the dangers of doing so was not adequate and was visible only when the passenger's sun visor was in the stowed position. The presence of ISOFIX anchorages in the rear outboard seats was not clearly marked.

Pedestrian protection
The bumper was rated as predominantly fair for its protection of pedestrians' legs. The part of the bonnet surface likely to be struck by adults' heads was rated as predominantly poor.

HONDA CIVIC

Front impact
Honda have modified the safety system of the Civic for the 2008 model year car. The timing of the pretensioners has been changed to provide better restraint of the front seat passengers and dual stage frontal airbags have replaced the previous single stage units. However, in the frontal test, the driver's airbag was not sufficiently well inflated to prevent the driver's head from contacting the steering wheel. The passenger compartment remained stable. Structures in the dashboard presented a potential hazard to the driver's femurs.

Side impact
The 2008 Civic has a larger side airbag than its 2006 predecessor. Rib deflections were lower, resulting in a score one point higher than the earlier version. Like last time, the car scored the maximum two points in the pole test.

Child-protection
The passenger airbag can be disabled by Honda dealers to allow a rearward facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. There was a clear warning of the dangers of using a childseat in that seat if the airbag has not been disabled. The presence of ISOFIX anchorages in the rear outboard seats was not clearly marked.

Pedestrian protection
Honda have made no changes that would influence the results of the pedestrian tests so the results of the car tested in 2006 have been carried over here. Both the bumper and the leading edge of the bonnet scored maximum points for the protection they offered to the legs of pedestrians. The part of the bonnet likely to be struck by a child's head was also rated predominantly 'fair'.

DAIHATSU MATERIA

Front impact
The driver dummy indicated considerable differential movement between the femur and the tibia. Such movement can lead to knee injuries. That result, combined with penalties for dashboard structures which could present further hazards to the driver, led to a 'weak' rating for protection of the knees, femurs and pelvis. The passenger compartment remained stable during the impact.

Side impact
A head protecting airbag is available as an option. As it is not standard equipment, the car was not eligible for a pole test.

Child-protection
The passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. However, information provided to the driver regarding the status of the airbag is not sufficiently clear. There was a clear warning of the dangers of using a rearward facing childseat in the position without having first disabled the airbag. The presence of ISOFIX anchorages in the rear outboard seats was not clearly marked.

Pedestrian protection
The bumper provided predominantly fair protection, as did the bonnet surface where an adult's head would strike. However, the front edge of the bonnet provided predominantly poor protection, as did that part of the surface where a child's head would contact.

Daihatsu Mud Master-C: 2007 Tokyo Show Preview

Toyota’s Daihatsu Motors will take the wraps off a mini van concept small enough to fit in the back seat of a Chevy Avalanche at this year’s Tokyo Show. Dubbed Mud Master-C (how do they come up with these names?), the miniscule van looks production ready but don’t get your hopes up to see it on either side of the Atlantic. To our misfortune, there’s not much information surrounding the Mud Master-C apart from a poorly translated teaser press release that the Japanese carmaker issued late last night. You can check it out right after the jump. -Continued

Frankfurt Show: Daihatsu OFC 1 Roadster

Oh cool, I wonder if it’s available in adult sizes… More of a toy than a car, Daihatsu’s second mini concept also failed to impress us though we suspect that female visitors probably found it cute. Equipped with a turbocharged, 3-cylinder 0,6-litre petrol engine that delivers 63 Hp the OFC 1 features a 3-piece electromotive roof that neatly folds in the trunk (...) in less than 10 sec. -Press release and image gallery after the jump

Press Release: Daihatsu OFC 1

Introducing a concept model that shows the future shape of an open sports car, conceived by Daihatsu as a car for adults who want to feel the wind as they drive.

The OFC-1 expresses the feel of a liberating, transparent canopy cockpit, and the familiarity of a flowing, smooth teardrop silhouette. Moreover, a glass top with liquid crystal sunshade used for the electromotive canopy-top open roof offers a free and liberating open-air feeling, regardless of the weather.

The 3-piece electromotive open roof completes operation in less than ten seconds and preserves independent trunk space even when the roof is open to improve the convenience of compact convertibles and allow enough trunk storage space for two adults to take an overnight trip.

In addition, a rear spoiler melded into the body, plus the 17-inch alloy wheels, express powerful running performance.

The interior is an expression of the sports mind compressed into a compact space. In addition to the expression of a mechanical image function in the meter center cluster, the high-contrast interior color arrangement serves to orchestrate a progressive, high-quality and sporty interior space.

For running performance, the Powertrain technology combines a high-performance turbo engine together with CVT with 7-speed paddle shift to achieve the highest level of both fuel consumption performance and environmental performance for vehicles in its class.

To commensurate with the underside of a sports car, the vehicle is equipped with 4 wheel disc brakes, electronic modulated suspension and stabilizers which improves roll stiffness thus producing a high performing spinning system together with the adoption of the 165/50R17 sport tyres.

Frankfurt Show: Daihatsu HSC Concept

Was ist dieses? Oh, dieses ist das Daihatsu HSC Konzept, ein zukĂ¼nftiges kleines Autokonzept. What did you think; that we’d travel all the way to Frankfurt for a whopping 24-hours and we wouldn’t pick up a word or two… Sadly, we can’t say what we want about Daihatu’s mini concept in German so we’ll just tell you in unadorned English; unbelievably boring and completely emotionless. You could patch any automotive badge on this egg-styled bucket on wheels and no one would ever notice the difference. Sorry Daihatsu, we’ll pass on this one. -Press release and image gallery after the jump

Press Release: Daihatsu HSC

Daihatsu proposes a next-generation small car concept that is gentle to the Earth and its people, for all those people who want to choose a car that is actively kind to the environment. The HSC, or Heart & Smile Mover, is a proposal for a new sedan style based on ease of use and safety design that utilizes practical technologies to achieve both excellent fuel consumption performance and space to seat four adults comfortably.

While maintaining space that accommodates four people in comfort, it achieves a low CD value of 0.28 that contributes to improved fuel consumption through a sleek design that makes use of a wing-shaped cabin cross-section and a catamaran-like underbody that extends past the wheels to reach all along the body. At the same time, engine heat is exhausted out of the front wheel disc, to ensure that a thorough aerodynamic control design is maintained.

The car uses a flat floor and floating image long-slide seat. And with satellite switches, operating systems concentrated on a floor control tower, and a liquid crystal monitor meter, it offers all-new information displays.

Characteristics

  • -Use of double doors through elimination of the B pillar, and of flat floors, for a space that is easy to get in and out of.
  • -4.1L/100km fuel consumption is achieved through an efficient Power Unit combining factors including reduced friction, improved fuel combustibility and increased compression ratio together with CVT, Idle Stop System and aerodynamic control design with CD value of 0.28.
  • -Lightweight, safe frame, with side and back monitors plus 11-inch large monitor to reduce dead spots.
  • - Offers comfortable habitability for 4 adults while also achieving advanced aerodynamic performance.
