Opel Registers 500,000th New Corsa

GM’s German subsidiary Opel has announced that it registered the 500,000th new Corsa since the B-Segment hatch went on sale in Europe around 14 months ago. According to Opel, the new Corsa’s registrations across Europe in the first 11 months of 2007 were increased by around 50 percent compared to the same last-year period. Since the launch of the first Corsa 25 years ago, almost ten million units have been sold in Europe. The ten-millionth model will probably be produced toward the end of January 2008.

2008 Opel Corsa GSi: New Image Gallery & Full Press Release

Opel has released a new set of images along with a more detailed press release on its new Corsa GSi model that was previewed at the Geneva Show last March (click here). The Corsa GSi is fitted with a detuned version of the Corsa OPC’s 1.6-litre turbo engine producing 150 Hp (OPC: 192Hp). The GSi accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8,1 sec and achieves a top speed of 210 km/h (131 mph).

Unlike the Corsa OPC which looks like a Doberman on steroids, the GSi receives a sporty “nip & tuck” treatment with the addition of a subtle sport package consisting of a front spoiler lip, rear apron lip and spoiler, colour-keyed side sills, chrome sport tailpipe and 17-inch alloy wheels. The Corsa GSi will compete in the European entry-level GTi segment that includes cars like the Peugeot 207 GTi, Fiat Grande Punto Abarth & Mitsubishi Colt CZT. -Image gallery& press release after the jump

Powerful Performance and Subtle Sportiness

· 150 hp turbo gasoline engine available for three and five-door models
· Constantly high torque over broad rpm range
· Variable progressive steering feedback curve provides sports car feeling

Rüsselsheim. The motto of the new Opel Corsa GSi, which joined the Corsa model line in June 2007, is ‘more substance than show’. Unlike the uncompromising high-performance look of the Opel Corsa OPC that was launched in March 2007, the new GSi radiates subtle sportiness, and is now available as a five-door variant. The GSi’s powerful 1.6 ECOTEC turbo engine produces 110 kW/150 hp at 5000 rpm, positioning the new sporty model between the Corsa Sport 1.7 CDTI with 92 kW/125 hp and the high-performance Corsa OPC with 141 kW/192 hp. It takes the new Corsa to a top speed of 210 km/h and accelerates it from zero to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds. The lowered sport chassis, Electric Power Steering (EPS) with variable progressive feedback curve and sporty tuned ESPPlus as standard ensure agile handling.

“We’re pleased to again have another GSi model in our portfolio. Opel fans know what GSi stands for: plenty of fun, good value for money and no compromises in everyday use,” explains Alain Visser, Executive Director European Marketing Opel/Vauxhall. “The Corsa GSi combines the virtues of its compact dimensions with impressive performance over the entire rpm range, which actually positions it in the next higher car class.” The successful Corsa model range now includes five gasoline and three diesel variants with a performance spectrum of 60 to 192 hp. Around 400,000 new Corsas have been sold across Europe since the fourth-generation’s launch in October 2006, surpassing all expectations.

1.6 Turbo ECOTEC: Lightweight compact engine

The 110 kW/150 hp, 1.6-liter turbo engine in the Corsa GSi provides high performance combined with fuel economy and environmental compatibility. Weighing just 131 kg, the compact engine produces considerable power: the Corsa GSi accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds and has a top speed of 210 km/h. In addition to the rapid turbo response, the engine with sequential manifold injection boasts excellent elasticity – the GSi accelerates from 80 to 120 km/h in just 8.2 seconds in fifth gear. The maximum torque of 210 Nm is available constantly from 1850 to 5000 rpm which, together with the six-speed manual transmission, forms a key part of the GSi’s impressive driving performance. The Corsa GSi requires just 7.9 liters of super unleaded gasoline per 100 kilometers – a very low figure for such a sporty car.

The clever, lightweight construction is an important characteristic of the standard engine. Including the aluminum bearing cover, the grey cast iron block weighs only 27 kg. The cylinder head, oil sump and turbo-specific induction manifold with side-mounted throttle valve are all made from aluminum. Other construction highlights of the GSi’s turbo engine, which has a remarkable output per liter of 94 hp, include a rapid-response compressor with external water cooling. Its turbine reaches over 200,000 rpm. The turbocharger housing is integrated into the cast exhaust manifold - an Opel-typical design that is optimal for the weight and rapid response of the turbocharger. Other features include the air-cooled intercooler, exhaust valves that are cooled by sodium in the shaft and oil-spray cooling of the flat pistons. There is also the stronger crankshaft drive, friction-optimized operation of the camshafts and the new two-mass flywheel with torsional-vibration damper that improves running smoothness.

The unit is also well suited for the future. The preconverter directly behind the turbine outlet supplements the main underfloor catalytic converter and improves the quick response of the three-way exhaust emission control. Together with the new hybrid technology engine control unit, it is perfectly positioned to meet all requirements of the upcoming Euro 5 emissions standard.

Sporty tuning of steering, chassis and brakes

The excellent driving dynamics and agile handling match the newest Corsa variant’s distinctive temperament. These characteristics are also typical of the fourth Corsa generation as a whole. The GSi’s Electronic Power Steering (EPS) responds variably, which enables easier maneuvering. The variable progressive feedback curve, which is unique in this class, provides a more direct response ratio at smaller

steering-wheel angles. Together with the dynamic chassis design, it provides a true sports car feeling. Other driving fun factors include the torsion-resistant body, which is 18 mm lower in front and 15 mm lower in the rear, as well as the chassis with front subframe and rear torsion beam. Just like the Corsa OPC, this gives the GSi variant a stronger rear axle profile, which increases the roll rate by 25 percent, and modified spring/dampener tuning. With the ABS and sophisticated ESPPlus system, the Corsa GSi is always under control: in addition to brake assist, Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Understeer Control Logic (UCL), separate Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and Straight-Line Stability control (SLS) functions are activated when needed. Experienced, sporty drivers can have even more driving fun by switching off the ESPPlus. The large 16-inch brake system from the Corsa OPC ensures strong deceleration: the Corsa GSi boasts 25 mm thick, internally ventilated 308 mm front disk brakes and 264 mm disk brakes at the rear. Low-profile, size 215/45 R 17 tires on seven-inch light alloy wheels ensure optimum traction.

Sporty, refined looks

The Opel Corsa GSi design elements radiate sporty refinement. Exterior modifications include a front spoiler lip, rear apron lip and spoiler, color-keyed side sills, chrome sport tailpipe and 17-inch light alloy wheels. The interior’s dynamic ambience is emphasized by the comfortable, black/red upholstered sport seats with high side support, a leather steering wheel with red inserts, red safety belts, chrome-ringed instruments and aluminum-look pedals.

The combination of easy-going GSi driving fun and ample equipment is highlighted by the extensive list of standard comfort and safety elements. This includes: front and rear head curtain airbags, active head restraints in front, air conditioning, tinted heat-absorbing glazing, radio remote control central locking, power heated exterior mirrors, power windows in front, backlit switches and displays, reading lamps, stereo CD-Radio CD 30 MP3 with steering wheel remote control, height-adjustable driver’s seat, height and reach-adjustable steering wheel, foldable rear bench seat back split 1/3:2/3, double luggage compartment floor, door-to-door lighting and fog lamps. Technology options available for the Corsa GSi that are unique in this class include halogen headlamps with dynamic curve and static cornering light.

Opel Corsa Hybrid Concept & Vectra FlexPower Debut In Frankfurt

GM’s European subsidiary Opel will debut two environmentally friendly models at the Frankfurt Show on September 11, the Corsa Hybrid Concept and the Vecta FlexPower equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo engine designed for operation with bioethanol/gasoline. Leaving the Vectra aside, the Corsa Hybrid is powered by GM’s next-generation Hybrid system which uses a lithium-ion battery and a 75Hp 1.3 CDTI diesel engine. This combination of a diesel engine and electric generator results to an avg. fuel consumption of just 3.75l per 100 km (62.7 mpg) while CO2 emissions are reduced to 99 grams of CO2 per km. -Press release after the jump

Opel Presents Corsa Hybrid Concept

Near future: Corsa Hybrid concept car and Vectra Flexpower show potential

Good outlook for environment: ecoFLEX variants with lowest CO2 value in model line

Clean debut: Corsa 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX with 119 g CO2 per kilometer

Ongoing advancement: Combination of intelligent fuel-saving technologies

Rüsselsheim. Opel presents a range of especially economical and low-emission vehicles at the IAA in Frankfurt (September 13 – 23, 2007). The current models showcase how automotive technology will look in the near future: the Corsa Hybrid concept car uses innovative technology with starter generator and stop/start automatic transmission which contributes to an average consumption of about 3,75 liters of diesel per 100 km (99 g CO2/km). The Vectra Flexpower with a 2.0-liter turbo engine designed for operation with bioethanol/gasoline mix also makes its debut at the IAA.

Opel will soon offer new ecoFLEX variants, which have the lowest CO2 emissions in their respective model line. The premiere variant – the 55 kW/75 hp Corsa 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX with diesel particulate filter – makes its European premiere at the IAA. Available to order from December, the well-equipped five-door version produces just 119 grams of CO2 per kilometer, which corresponds to an MVEG consumption of 4.5 liters of diesel per 100 km. ecoFLEX variants of other high-volume model lines will also be available at the end of the year: Meriva 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX, Astra 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX, as well as natural gas-powered Zafira and Combo CNG ecoFLEX versions.

The current product portfolio highlights just how committed Opel is to the reduction of emissions and consumption. Numerous Opel models positioned around the ecoFLEX area at the IAA produce less than 140 g CO2 per kilometer.

Corsa Hybrid concept car with just 99 grams CO2 per kilometer

The Opel Corsa Hybrid concept car, which makes its world debut next month at the IAA in Frankfurt, is a result of General Motors’ expanded efforts to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Powered by the next-generation GM Hybrid system and diesel engine technology, the Corsa Hybrid concept car requires just 3,75 liters of diesel per 100 km and emits only 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Based on the 55 kW/75 hp Corsa 1.3 CDTI, fuel savings are largely achieved by GM’s next-generation belt-alternator starter technology debuting in this concept. The Corsa Hybrid uses a lithium-ion battery.

The Corsa Hybrid concept car’s hybrid technology combines the functions of a starter motor and electric generator. Its highly efficient diesel engine is also switched off by the hybrid system when the car is stopped, and restarted when the brake pedal is released. When extra power is required, such as when accelerating or overtaking, the motor provides significantly higher torque. This combination of 1.3-liter diesel engine and electric generator reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The lithium-ion battery provides the necessary electrical power for the belt-alternator starter, and the battery itself is recharged by the concept car’s regenerative braking function: when decelerating, the fuel is shut off and the vehicle’s kinetic energy is transformed into electrical energy.

The Corsa Hybrid concept car represents GM’s global commitment to a comprehensive and cost-effective advanced technology strategy focused on producing commercially viable and sustainable cars and trucks. These include alternative fuel vehicles, ongoing improvements to conventional internal combustion engines and transmissions, hybrid-electric and electric vehicles, as well as hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Corsa 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX signals the start

At the IAA in Frankfurt, Opel begins the current phase of its long-term ecoFLEX environmental strategy. This includes offering an especially low carbon dioxide-emitting ecoFLEX variant in each high-volume model line. ecoFLEX versions combine low consumption and emissions with excellent economy and driving fun. The first car in this range is the Corsa 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX, which only produces 119 grams of CO2 per kilometer and consumes an average of just 4.5 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers.

These excellent figures are a result of the world’s smallest four-cylinder common-rail turbo-diesel engine. The 1.3 CDTI ECOTEC was named “Engine of the Year” in the 1.0 to 1.4-liter displacement class in 2004 by automotive journalists from 26 countries because of its refinement, responsiveness and superb economy. Optimization of the engine map helps the four-cylinder unit achieve an average consumption reduction. High-level fuel management is ensured by the up to five, 1400-bar fuel injection processes per cycle that create an extremely fine fuel atomization in the combustion chambers, which have a total displacement of 1248 cm3. The maximum torque of 170 Nm is available from 1750 - 2500 rpm and maximum output of 55 kW/75 hp at 4000 rpm. The Corsa ecoFLEX with additionally longer axle-drive ratio has a top speed of 163 km/h and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 14.5 seconds. This extremely economical engine predestines the Corsa, highly versatile Meriva and spacious Astra five-door model to be ecoFLEX variants.

Natural gas propulsion with monovalentplus concept qualifies for ecoFLEX league

Opel’s natural gas-powered ecoFLEX vehicles also boast impressive environmental qualities. The Zafira and Combo CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) produce almost no soot particles, 20 percent less carbon dioxide than a comparable gasoline model and an up to 80 percent reduction in other harmful emissions. The two CNG variants’ unrivaled low operating costs also qualify them for the ecoFLEX league. The 69 kW/94 hp 1.6-liter engine obtains the most from its fuel, regardless of whether it runs on natural gas, biogas or any mixture of the two. A 14-liter reserve gasoline tank ensures continued mobility on routes without a natural gas filling station. Thanks to economical consumption and ample natural gas tank capacities, a total operating range of over 500 kilometers is available.

The natural gas vehicles’ excellent efficiency and unrestricted everyday suitability is ensured by the innovative monovalentplus concept. This concept made Opel the first automaker to successfully optimize an engine for natural gas operation and still enable the use of conventional gasoline. The unit has special pistons, valves and valve-seat inserts, as well as separate injection banks for natural gas and gasoline.

ecoFLEX variants show their colors

Opel emphasizes the special importance of the ecoFLEX versions with functional and design refinements. The hallmark of the premiere vehicles in Frankfurt is the “Green spirit” exterior lacquer. The bright turquoise color also trims the seat center strips. Distinctive elements of all ecoFLEX variants include the ecoFLEX signet on the rear and the green segment on the rpm counter. The latter shows the ideal rpm range to get the most from the engine’s high fuel-saving potential. The driver then knows when to change gears for improved fuel economy. Green stitching on the leather steering wheel, gear stick sleeve and the green gearshift guide on the gear stick are all eye-catching details.

Portfolio-wide application of environmental technologies

In addition to the ecoFLEX variants, Opel offers a wide range of vehicles that lead the way in their classes for fuel consumption and emissions. The engine concept is called “Eco-Turbo” and forms the basis for Opel’s state-of-the-art diesel and gasoline engines. Eco-Turbo engines follow the downsizing principle – turbocharged units with relatively small cylinder volumes – and successively replace units with larger displacements. Reduced engine friction and higher thermal efficiency are the results. Eco-Turbo engines run at more economical operating points, which significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.Take the Astra as an example: the 1.6 turbo ECOTEC (132 kW/180 hp) replaced the 2.0 turbo (125 kW/170 hp) in spring 2007. The smaller engine uses 14 percent less fuel than the two-liter unit, and therefore also produces less CO2 emissions. The new 1.7 CDTI turbo-diesel (81 kW/110 hp and 92 kW/125 hp) consumes seven percent less fuel than the 1.9-liter unit (74 kW/100 hp and 88 kW/120 hp). These Eco-Turbo engines also achieve better driving performances.

Gasoline engines with large displacements are being successively replaced by units with gasoline direct injection. Opel’s current direct injection engine range consists of a 2.2 DIRECT ECOTEC and a 2.0 turbo ECOTEC high-tech unit. The 2.0-liter turbo engine from the Opel GT produces an impressive power output per liter of 132 hp and features “Cam-Phase” – variable camshaft phasing –, which together with other measures reduce consumption by an extra three percent. Cam-Phase technology is also used in the 1.6 ECOTEC and 1.8 ECOTEC engines in the Astra, Zafira, Vectra and Signum.

Opel also wants to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption further with a range of optimizations to the engine’s periphery. This includes introducing Electric Power Steering (EPS) – familiar from the Corsa – across all variants, as it only draws exactly as much energy as it needs from the generator. The variable oil pump operates in a similar way, only moving as much lubricant around the engine as is actually required in the prevailing driving situation. Other fuel-reduction measures include low-resistance tires and detail improvements to the vehicle’s aerodynamics.

Vectra Flexpower runs on bioenergy

In the mid-term, Opel is committed to offering more variants that can operate on alternative fuels. At this year’s IAA, Opel displays the Flexpower, a Vectra sedan which appears unchanged from the outside, yet has a two-liter turbo engine that can run on E85 bioethanol fuel, conventional gasoline or any mixture of the two. The Flexpower’s engine management adjusts throttle position, air volume, injection and ignition point depending on the fuel mixture. The result of this continuous calibration is reliable, high performance. Despite the differences between gasoline and bioethanol when it comes to knocking resistance and energy density, the Vectra Flexpower’s 2.0t engine produces 129 kW/175 hp and 265 Nm of torque at 2500 rpm.

As bioethanol is produced from renewable crops, the Flexpower’s propulsion delivers a balanced carbon dioxide level. This is because the amount of CO2 released from E85 during combustion is practically identical to the level of carbon dioxide the plants absorbed from the atmosphere through photosynthesis when they were growing.

Opel Corsa OPC – Vauxhall Corsa VXR: Official pictures & info

Like we said before, it was a matter of hours before the first pictures of Opel’s brand new Corsa OPC or Vauxhall’s Corsa VXR if you prefer, showed up. Basically, there was a European embargo that ended when the clock struck 12 and the date changed to the 3rd of January. No Cinderella showed up but, that's how the story goes.

To be put against the hottest European mini GTI’s like Renault’s 197 Hp Clio RS and Seat’s 180Hp Ibiza Cupra, the Corsa OPC is Opel’s first serious attempt at the category. It sure has the looks with that super-aggressive bodykit that includes front and side air dams, Gallardo style 18’’ rims, race-style door mirrors and of course, the triangular exhaust placed at the centre of the rear bumper which also features a diffuser. Interior-wise, the OPC gets a Recaro bucket seats and a… Golf GTI inspired flat-bottomed sports steering wheel.

Corsa OPC’s running gear comes from the Meriva OPC. The 1.6-litre turbocharged engine produces 190 Hp (in the Meriva OPC it delivers 180 Hp) and 192lb ft of torque. According to Opel / Vauxhal, the Corsa OPC/ VXR does the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in 6,8 sec reaching a top speed of 225 km/h (140 mph). Thus meaning that on the papers, it’s a tad slower than its Astra OPC bro (0-100 km/h in 6,4 sec) but marginally faster than the Renault Clio RS (0-100 km/h in 6,9 sec).

The OPC also gets a revised suspension with new damper and spring settings and a new ESP system. Its public debut will be made at the Geneva Show in March with sales starting in Europe around April. And no, there are no plans to import it in the US as a Saturn…

UPDATE 3rd January- OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

We just got our hands on the official press release so we would like to make a few corrections. The Corsa OPC 1.6 Turbo engine produces 192Hp (and not 190Hp) while it goes from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.2 sec and not 6,8 sec as we wrote before (obviously it needs 6,8 sec for the 0-60 mph). finally, the OPC will be offered in Europe with 215/45 R17 tires ex works while 18'' rims and size 225 tires will be available as an option.

Paris Show : Opel Corsavan Concept

Not quite the exhilarating concept we've been waiting for from Opel and despite car maker's talk of , "a concept that takes the dynamic styling of New Corsa to an even sportier level, while also showing how the three-door car's looks would transfer to a city van", to us its just a Corsa with covered rear windows and an OPC styling pack.

Press Release: Finished in the same glossy Glamour Red as the Opel GT Concept shown at Geneva, Corsavan Concept features black-coloured side panels to replace the three-door Corsa's windows without detracting from the car's coupe-like lines. Distinctive sporty features include red front brake callipers, smart 17-inch alloy wheels and a OPC styling pack, comprising a new front bumper, side sills and a rear spoiler.

Black leather sports seats and piano-lacquer surfaces familiar from the Corsa hatchback complete the two-seater Corsavan Concept's interior, while a fully-lined load bay with a half-height bulkhead show how New Corsa's design translates into a very competent panel van, with a versatile load area. The concept car is powered by New Corsa's 90PS 1.3-litre CDTi engine with a six-speed gearbox.

2007 Opel – Vauxhall Corsa Five-Door

The new five-door Opel – Vauxhall Corsa, revealed in these pictures for the first time, is set to make its debut alongside the three-door version at this year’s British International Motorshow in London.

The five-door offers the stylish design and driving dynamics of the sporty three-door model, but with added practicality that makes it more versatile than the average five-door supermini.

The bold, flowing lines of the five-door Opel Corsa have a strong, powerful appearance, yet despite its road presence the newcomer is only slightly larger than its predecessor – 183mm longer, 61mm wider and 52mm taller. It has a deliberately different look to the three-door, which is aimed at a younger, sportier market.

GM Europe’s design chief Bryan Nesbitt said; “Dynamics and functionality are not mutually exclusive. Our new five-door Opel Corsa, like its big brother Astra, renders a completely unique design for the three-door versus the five-door. In short, these are tailor-made cars for different types of customer.”

Inside, New Opel Corsa five-door inherits the stylish cabin design of the three-door, with the same translucent dials on some models and an equally smart fascia. As well as more passenger space than the outgoing car, the boot can carry up to 1,100 litres with the seats down.

The excellent luggage space comes thanks to a clever new system known as ‘DualFloor’, where the load bay can be set on two different height levels thanks to a removable top floor panel. When removed, the top panel can be used as a vertical divider to separate the load bay into two sections, helping to prevent shopping from rolling around the load bay.

A further innovation is ‘FlexFix’ – an integral carrier system similar to that shown on the 2004 Opel Trixx concept car. Available as an option on all new Opel Corsas, FlexFix is pulled out from the rear bumper of the car like a drawer and can safely carry two bicycles, yet completely retracts into the bumper when not in use.

These flexible innovations complement other examples of Vauxhall’s latest technology, which will be offered across the range, including halogen AFL (Adaptive Forward Lighting), Cornering Brake Control and an optional Panorama sunroof.

Five-door versions of new Opel Corsa will have an identical engine line-up to the three-door, with 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4-litre petrol engines, as well as Vauxhall’s award-winning 1.3-litre CDTi common-rail diesel, producing 70 or 90PS. An all-new 1.7-litre CDTi unit with 125PS will also be on offer, and will provide a perfect blend of performance and fuel economy.

Prices and specifications for both three and five-door versions of New Opel Corsa will be announced when the model debuts at the British International Motor Show in July.
