Renault Megane R26.R: 30 High Res Photos / Wallpapers

Just a few months before the new Megane breaks cover at the Paris Show in October, Renault decided to send off the current generation model in style by presenting a hardcore version of the RS that lapped the Nurburgring race track in 8 minutes and 17 seconds. According to Renault, this is a new lap record for a front wheel drive production car. You can read all the details about the Megane R26.R here or just follow the jump for the full image gallery. -Continued

Renault Megane R26.R: Fastest Front Wheel Drive Production Car on the ‘Ring with 8’17’’

The limited edition Renault Megane R26.R made its world premier today at the British International Motor Show. Virtually a track-ready version of the Megane RS 230 F1 Team R26, the R26.R may not have the forthcoming Focus RS’ 300Hp but according to Renault, on 23 June it established a new lap record for a front wheel drive production car of the Nürburgring circuit with a time of just 8 minutes 17 seconds.

Based on the Megane 230 F1 Team R26, the R26.R retains the same 230 Hp 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, 6-speed gearbox (albeit with a short-shift gear linkage) and limited slip differential but with a significant weight reduction of 123kg or 271 lbs. This was achieved with the removal of the rear seats, passenger and curtain airbags, A/C, rear wash/wipe and heated rear window, front fog lamps, headlamp washers, radio/CD player, most of the soundproofing. Moreover the R26.R obtained a carbon fibre bonnet (saves 7.5kg), tailgate and rear side windows in polycarbonate (saves 5.7kg), sabelt seats with carbon fibre shell and aluminum base (saves 25kg).-Continued

Renault also upgraded the car’s suspension by re-calibrating the shock absorber settings and adding new front / rear springs and stiffer lower arm bushes. The brakes have also been updated with large 312mm ventilated discs at the front with Brembo four-piston calipers. To resist fade, the discs are grooved as opposed to drilled.

The R26.R accelerates from zero to 62mph (100 km/h) in 6 sec and passes the 1000 meter mark in 25.9 sec. Not that anyone interested in a car like this would car but the R26.R’s combined fuel consumption is 33.2 mpg UK (8.5 lt/100km or 27.7 mpg US) and emissions are 199g/km.

On the outside the R26.R can be distinguished from the carbon fibre bonnet and new 18” alloy wheels in red or black together with a new rear spoiler, plus R26.R decals and logos and tinted polycarbonate in place of glass in the tailgate and rear side windows. Additionally, the car’s ‘Ring time is etched on the windows. Renault’s track ready Megane R26.R is available in seven colors, two of which are new to the Megane, Racing Blue and Lunar Grey and one is totally brand new, Pearlescent White.

Inside the R26.R features competition seats with a carbon fibre shell and six-point harnesses -the first time that this form of restraint has been homologated in a production car. Also the steering wheel and gearlever gaiter are in leather and suede. Furthermore, buyers can opt for a full roll cage.

The Megane R26.R will go on sale in October but production limited to just 450 examples in total - 230 for the UK, 126 for France, 26 for Spain, 26 for Switzerland and 26 for Germany In the UK, the price for Renault’s radical Megane has been set at £22,990 OTR ($46,000 or €29,000).

The pricing for the optional equipment is:

  • Roll cage and Toyo Proxes tyres £700
  • Titanium exhaust £tbc
  • Deletion of decals No charge
  • Black alloy wheels £120
  • Climate control £460
  • Metallic paint £375

Renault Megane R26R – Official Teaser Images

One of our readers sent us these high-resolution teaser images of what seems to be the new Renault Megane R26 R that’s expected to debut at next week’s British Motor Show (July 22). From what we can tell by looking at the teaser photos, the limited edition Megane R26 R has been equipped with a roll-cage and a race-style bucket seat for the driver. The car also features stickers depicting the Nurburgring race track, something that may confirm the rumors that the Megane R26 R has performed the fastest lap on the ‘Ring for a front-wheel-drive production model.

The road legal but track focused Megane R26 R is based on the standard Megane RS. According to sources, while Renault has maintained the stock version’s 224 Hp 2.0-liter turbo, the limited edition model has been stripped down to reduce weight. Other weight saving measures are said to include carbon-fiber body parts and polycarbonate windows. -One more photo after the jump

2009 Renault Megane Fully Exposed

Although we’ve seen these pictures of the unmasked 2009 Renault Megane before, our friend Stavros sent us a new set of high-res versions that were scanned from British car magazine Autoexpress. The larger images allow us to get a better view of the VW Golf-sized French compact hatch that seems to have been scooped (?) inside Renault’s factory.

The new Megane, which is partially inspired from the 2008 Geneva Show Megane Coupe concept, will be available in five-door and three-door/coupe versions that differ significantly in design. The Megane’s debut is planned for the forthcoming Paris Show this fall, with sales following shortly after. –More pics after the jump

2009 Renault Megane 5d & Coupe Fully Exposed

The forthcoming 2009 Renault Megane has been snatched without a trace of camouflage by the folks over at the French car magazine “Auto Plus”. And when we’re saying with no camouflage we mean it “in and out” as from the looks of it, someone either left the factory door wide open or Renault decided to give the French magazine an exclusive scoop-de-tour of the Megane.

As presumed, the five-door version features a differentiated design from its three-door (Coupe) sibling which is inspired from the Megane Coupe Concept that was unveiled at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.-Continued

Both variants of the 2009 Megane will make their public debut at the Paris Auto Show in September with European sales following shortly after. The Megane will rival the Ford Focus, VW Golf and other mainstream compact hatches.

2009 Renault Laguna Coupe & Megane 5d Scooped in Australia

-UPDATE: Mr. Hope e-mailed us and kindly requested that we remove the pictures

A local pharmacist
Australia called Mark Hope from the village of Yungaburra, in Queensland, managed to scoop these pictures when a pair of disguised Renault prototype models stopped by for a coffee break. Turns out that the camouflaged prototypes were indeed the upcoming 2009 Renault Megane 5door hatchback and the 2009 Renault Laguna Coupe, both of which are expected at this year’s Paris Motor Show in September.

The Renault Laguna Coupe was previewed as a concept at the 2007 Frankfurt Show and from what we can tell from the pictures, the production version’s styling seems toned down a bit, but in general, the coupe looks like it retains the concept’s silhouette. The Laguna Coupe will most probably be offered with 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol and diesel engines generating between 140 and 201 Hp along with a top-notch 3.5-liter V6 unit. -Continued

Continuing with the 2009 Megane, Renault had given us a sneak peak of the 3door / Coupe variant at the Geneva Show in March (see here). Snapped here in 5door form, the new Megane lets go of the current version’s weirdly styled arse for a more subtle design. However -no thanks to the heavy camouflage, that’s about all we can comment on Renault’s VW Golf adversary.

Renault Megane Coupe: Production Version to be Launched this Year!

While we all knew that Renault’s Geneva Show star, the Megane Coupe Concept (Click here for pictures & video) would form the base for a production version, what we didn’t know, is when we’d see it in the market. That will happen much sooner that we thought as, according to Renault’s design director Patrick Le Quement, the production version of the Concept will be launched before the end of the year along with a more conventional five-door model.

The new Megane, which will be revealed in September at the Paris Motor Show, won’t have a traditional 3door hatchback version – instead the range will feature a VW Scirooco-like coupe based on the concept unveiled in Geneva.

“You have the design before your very eyes,” said Renault design director Patrick Le Quement. He also said that while the new Megane is “a strong design statement”, it will not polarize opinions in the same way as the current model. “Those that didn't like the current model at first never did grow to like it,” said Le Quement. “The new model won't have the upright line at the rear – it will be more acceptable - but it will shake its arse for sure!” –Continued after the jump

The French carmaker will also shorten the timespan of the model renewal program. “The entire Megane range will be renewed by the end of 2009,” said Le Quement. This includes saloon, coupe-cabrio and estate bodystyles, plus “at least one more model”.
