Subaru Exiga 7-Seater Minivan Officially Unveiled

The Exiga is Subaru’s proposition in the (Japanese & European) mid-size minivan segment. In typical Subaru style, the Exiga looks more like a station-wagon with a higher roofline rather than a typical MPV. And as with many other products from the Japanese carmaker, the Exiga provides further proof to as why we beleive that Subaru seriously needs to reassess its design language or rather, the total lack of it...

Based on the Impreza’s underpinnings but with an extended wheelbase (2.750 mm) to accommodate seven passengers in three rows of seats, the Exiga measures in at 4,740mm in length, 1,775mm in width and 1,660mm in height.

The Exiga is offered with two powertrain options; a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter boxer unit developing 146Hp / 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 19,5 kgm / 3,200 rpm combined with a 4-speed automatic transmission; and a turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer with 221Hp / 5,600 rpm and a maximum torque of 33,2 kgm / 4,400 rpm matted to a 5-speed auto. Both models come with standard symmetrical AWD systems. -Continued

A key feature of the Exiga is the large panoramic glass roof that fully covers area above the second row of seats. Notably, the three rows of seats are laid out at three different heights, like gradually elevated theater seating, placing the first and second rows slightly lower than the third to allow all passengers better outside views.

For the time being, the Exiga is offered solely in the Japanese market with sales starting from today, June 16, 2008.

Video: 2009 Subaru Exiga 7-Seater Crossover

While we still have to wait a couple of weeks before Subaru takes (all) the wraps off the 2009 Exiga that we first showed you earlier today, the Japanese carmaker has added a teaser video on its dedicated site that reveals a few more details on the new crossover/MPV that will go on sale in Japan (initially) later in the year. See the video right after the jump. -Continued

Subaru Exiga Crossover Teaser Pictures Officially Released

Following last week’s leak when a scanned picture of the 2009 Subaru Exiga brochure found its way into the net, the Japanese carmaker came out today with an official press release along with two teaser shots of its forthcoming 7-seater crossover. Based on the homonymous concept car at last year’s Tokio Motor Show, the production Exiga will be fully revealed in a couple of weeks, on June 17, 2008.

Subaru’s teaser press release isn’t much of a help, but it seems that the Exiga is some sort of seven-seater crossover/MPV that fits between the Forester and Legacy/Outback models. We’ve also added one more official image of the Exiga after the jump that we enhanced with photoshop. -Continued

Subaru Exiga 7-Seater Concept - 2007 Tokyo Show

We begin our Tokyo Show previews today with Subaru’s 7-seater Exiga concept. According to Subie, the Exiga “combines a liberating roomy interior space that can comfortably accommodate seven adult passengers with exhilarating driving performance”. The 4,780 mm long Exiga sits on a 2,750 mm wheelbase and it is powered by a 2.0-liter Horizontally-Opposed turbo engine mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. Needless to say, the Exiga is equipped with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system. Since the Exiga is suspiciously too production-like for a concept, the question is, what model is it previewing; the next-gen Legacy Station Wagon, a new crossover, how about the new Forester? Have your say in the comments below. -Continued
